The Society (Société Internationale de Sénologie) was founded in 1976 by Dr. Charles-Marie Gross, father of the modern breast imaging and forger of the concept of senology.
Today SIS is a worldwide unique federation of breast societies, scientific societies, associations and groups with a priority mission: to improve breast health. The SIS-International School of Senology promotes educational activities in collaboration with about 100 affiliated institutions. Further, SIS has implemented an accreditation program for breast centres giving an international accreditation. The SIS World Congress highlights every two years the progress of scientific knowledge in the domain of breast health.
Dr. Charles Marie Gros (1910 – 1984), was Professor of Medicine from 1950 – 1975, and Head of the Department of Radiotherapy and Radiology at University of Strasbourg, France. In 1963, he Created a new multidisciplinary medical specialty for the care of breast diseases, allowing scientific strictness and humanism, proposing to identify it with the term Sénologie.
Prof. Gros developed the first Breast Unit exclusively dedicated to diagnosis and treatment of Breast Diseases and participated with the Compagnie Générale de Radiologie (CGR), in the creation, developing and promotion of the mammography equipment called Senographe.
On 1975, he founded the Société Internationale de Sénologie (SIS). This same year, he established the First Diplôme Universitaire on Breast Diseases and published the first Journal on Breast Diseases: Senologia. (View a number of archived covers of the original Senologie Journal)
The following years, he organized a number of International Congress on Breast Diseases, such as: Conservative Treatment of Breast Cancer. Strasbourg, France (1972); Non-Cancerous Breast Diseases. Strasbourg, France (1976); Psycho-sociological Aspects of Breast Diseases. Strasbourg, France (1977); Breast and Pain. Strasbourg, France. (1979).
Our society is inpired by the work of Prof. Charles Marie Gros, as well as other important contributors to the Senology field, such as our Honorary Presidents, Prof. Umberto Veronesi, Prof H.J. Frischbier and Prof. Miguel Prats Esteve.
Since 1976, the Senologic International Society (SIS) aims on bringing together the national societies of Senology around the world and improving the knowledge and quality of breast health assistance worldwide, counting with the valuable contribution of our Presidents and Board of Directors.
