SIS in a few words

The SIS was founded in 1976 in Strasbourg (France). Today, the SIS is a unique worldwide federation of more than a hundred learned or scientific societies, associations and groups, located in 5 continents, with a priority mission: to improve breast health by constantly putting the patient in the center of its concerns. It is a society turned towards the future with a particular focus on innovation, transdisciplinarity and contribution of digital technology.

Letter of the President, Professor Vahit Omen

Dear colleagues, dear friends,

First of all, I would like to state that I am very honored and happy to be the president of Senologic International Society (SIS) during this period (2024 – 2026). SIS was founded about 50 years ago and is an international association of breast health and breast cancer societies in different countries on five continents (www.sisbreast.org).

I have worked in different positions at SIS for many years. In 2018, I served as the President of the 20th World Breast Health Congress in Strasbourg, France. Unfortunately, due to the covid pandemic, which caused great deaths and economic losses, we were able to hold our 21st congress in Rhodes, Greece in 2023. At the SIS General Assembly held here, it was decided that our 22nd World Congress will be held in Puerto Rico in 2025 and our 23rd World Congress will be held in China in 2026. I will be very happy to see you at these congresses.

Since I know the important role of Scientific Societies in the development of breast health, I took part in the establishment of the Istanbul Breast Society in 1989 and the Turkish Federation of Breast Diseases Societies in 2005. Under the umbrella of the Federation, the Turkish Breast Cancer Registry Program was established and analyzes of 20,000 patients were published as books and articles. In addition, in 2005, we launched the European Journal of Breast Health. The Bahcesehir Population-Based Mammographic Screening Project (2010-2019) conducted by The Breast Health Society, which we established as a patient counseling association, and the Breast Cancer Registry Project have shown that approximately half of breast cancer patients in Turkey are 50< years old. As a result, the age of initiation of mammographic screening in Turkey has been reduced from 50 to 40 years by the Ministry of Health and the screening interval has been determined as 40-69. I think that the duties of the societies are not only to organize congresses and I believe that we will carry out such important projects and events together within the SIS.

The European Journal of Breast Health (Eur J Breast Health) is the official publication of the Turkish Federation of Breast Diseases Societies, and the Senologic International Society (SIS) and the National Consortium of Breast Centers (NCBC) are the official supporters of the journal. The European Journal of Breast Health indexed in PubMed Central, Web of Science-Emerging Sources Citation Index, Scopus, Embase, EBSCO, CINAHL, CNKI and DOAJ. We will also be happy to publish your scientific articles in our journal.

Dear colleagues, we have made significant changes to the bylaws to allow the SIS to accept individual memberships and will be implemented soon. In particular, we will be very happy for all societies and friends who work on breast health and science to participate in SIS to produce scientific projects and hold regional meetings.

With the desire to spend a successful and fruitful period together.

Yours sincerely,
